What is temporary works?
Temporary works (TW) are structures or equipment used during construction that are not part of the finished project — falsework, formwork, scaffolding, excavation support, propping, temporary bridges and facade retention systems. They carry their own design and management obligations under BS 5975:2024, separate from the permanent works design.
What do I do for temporary works?
BS 5975:2024 requires you to appoint a Designated Individual (DI) and a Temporary Works Co-ordinator (TWC), maintain a TW register, manage the design process with appropriate checks, issue Permits to Load before use, conduct weekly inspections while TW is in use, and issue Permits to Unload before dismantling. temporaryworks.online guides you through every step.
What is a TWC in construction?
A Temporary Works Co-ordinator (TWC) is the person responsible for co-ordinating all temporary works activity on a construction project, as defined by BS 5975:2024 Clause 9. The Principal Contractor appoints a PC's TWC with overall site responsibility, and each sub-contractor may appoint their own TWC for the TW they carry out.
Temporary works coordinator responsibilities (UK)
Temporary works coordinator responsibilities in the UK include: maintaining the TW register; ensuring each TW item has a design brief, design, and an appropriate independent design check; issuing Permits to Load before a structure is brought into use; arranging and recording weekly inspections; and issuing Permits to Unload before dismantling. The TWC also confirms that only approved designers are used and that training records are current.
